Ever since Kennedy’s ultrasound last week, I have been dying to know the sex of our child. She’s four months pregnant, looking more beautiful than ever, and I am so in love with her and the baby inside her belly. I’m going to be a father.

It all feels too surreal after what had happened with Payton. The thought of losing Kennedy or this child terrifies me some days, rips me out of a cold sweat in the middle of the night. But I know they’re not going anywhere. This time I’m playing for keeps.

Sydney convinced Kennedy that we needed a gender reveal party. Apparently, it’s the hot new thing for couples to do with their friends and family. I wanted to know the second we walked into the doctor’s office. Kennedy insisted we go along with the party that Donovan and her had planned for us. It’s only fitting that we give the godparents of our baby the chance to help welcome him or her into the world.

Sitting on the couch next to Kennedy, with Roxie at our feet, I pull her into my chest and place my hand on her stomach.

“This is incredible,” Kennedy whispers into my ear. “Sydney just slapped all of this together as if she’s been planning this party for years.”

“What’s incredible is you and our baby.” I smile so wide my jaw hurts.

She plants a kiss on my cheek and brushes her fingers over my hand. “Are you ready to find out what we’re having, Daddy?”

“Of course. I’ve wanted to know since the second you told me you were pregnant.”

“Are you hoping for a boy?”

I shrug. “I’ll be happy no matter what we’re having. If it’s a girl, she’ll be my princess, and I’ll spoil the shit out of her.”

“Like you do with me,” she adds with a wide grin.

I nod. “Yes. And if it’s a boy, I’ll get him a pair of skates as soon as he can walk. He can be my mini me.”

“I’m hoping for a girl,” she says, softly. “I’d like to do all the things with her that my mother never did with my sister and me. I pretty much raised Savvy since my mother was always lost in her own world and my dad was working, so I’d like to have that mother-daughter bond I was missing as a child.”

Kennedy has given me everything I ever wanted and more. She’s everything I needed without even knowing it was missing. We fit together like two jigsaw pieces completing a perfect puzzle.

“We’re ready,” Sydney announces, strolling into my living room as if she’s balancing her tiara on her head and she’s the Queen of England. She has such poise and grace as she moves.

I laugh to myself the way she drags Donovan behind her. That woman sure knows how to keep him on his toes. I never thought I would see the day that he settled down. But both of us have made some serious changes in our lives since we met our girls.
